There has been a report about a black man carrying a gun
Friday night, I go to a gas station, and I get a water cup. I’m on my way back to my spot when all of a sudden a cop car stops in front of me and flashes its lights. I don’t know what is going on so I slow down. All of a sudden a cop gets out. “Down on the ground and spread them!” I hear him cocking a gun. So I get down on the ground with my hands spread where the cops can see them. Then the cop says, “We’ll tell you what is going on when we’re done.” Then other cop cars show up and other cops rush towards me and they cuff me. I’m thinking that they are just going to arrest me for the hell of it. Then one cop said, “You are not under arrest we’re just detaining you. We’re going to run your I.D. and check your stuff to see if everything is all right. There has been a phone call about a black man walking around carrying a gun and you fit the description.” So they check my stuff and find that I don’t have a gun. After that, they help me up and tell me the whole situation. “There has been a report about a black man carrying a gun walking around on this street and you fit the description.” They then ask me “Did you see anyone else walking on this street?” I said “No.” They said, “We had to check you and make sure you weren’t dangerous. The guy with the gun, no telling what kind of mindset he has.” I said, “I hope you catch him, because what if I ran into him instead of you guys…” So they let me go and I make it to my usual spot. I’m playing the whole sequence over in my head and going over everything that was said. I realize two possibilities. The first being that this incident is on the other side of town. The second was that someone made a false report on me. I focused on the second possibility because I realize I’m not well liked in my area. As of right now I am very sick to my stomach. My feeling is if it is a false report, I better not find out who is making these calls. But another possibility is that it is on the other side of town and someone called 911 and was vague, possibly out of being endangered and the cops were checking all suspects who happen to resemble the description.
